Activity 1.5. Course-level innovation for Pacific data science

Alliance faculty are designing, piloting, evaluating and refining curriculum in data science and computer science. New courses and course redesigns are supported to broaden participation and improve alignment with Pacific regional ontologies and epistemologies

  • New courses include DS 360 Scalable Data and Bias, DS362 Cloud Computing, and DS 364 Introduction to High Performance Computing

  • Project-based learning on stakeholder use cases is embedded throughout the DS major, connecting studies to Pacific place, challenges and communities

  • Data Science 101 has been extensively redesigned as a ‘decision science’ course that leverages Alliance partners such as the Hawaii Climate Data Portal, Pacific Drought Knowledge Exchange and Constellaion.io to provide real world use cases in the classroom

  • Pedagogically, course redesign is being informed by our partner the JADE NSF BCSER (PI Alex Stokes) on Justice-oriented Approaches to Data science Education and the culture-based STEM work of the Chaminade HHMI ‘Inclusive Excellence’ program (Kumu Kaholali’i)
